NFL Draft Picks Project

So if you follow me on twitter, this wont come as a surprise, but during the first round of the draft I was tweeting out pictures of the pics as they happened. Now that it's all over, I have cobbled them together in one place. Actually, two places. Here is the other one

For the 2013 draft, The Draw Play (me) and Draftpedia, a free app that contains encyclopedic information about NBA and NFL draft picks, teamed up to try and make all 32 players into cartoons as the players got picked, mostly to amuse folks and try and do something different, something you don't normally see during the draft itself. For the most part I think it got a good response. Many have asked how I did them so quickly, and the secret is: I had them all pre-drawn and set up with gray jerseys. When the picks were made, it was simply a matter of using the paint bucket to fill the colors, do any jersey flourishes (like stripes or collars), edit the team picked by and the BG color, save, and send out. It's best to be prepared.

To do this properly, we needed to compile a list of anyone we could see as a first round prospect. So instead of drawing 32 players, I drew 48. As it turned out, I missed 3 on the first go round, but drew them the next day. So here is every player I drew, colored, edited, and set up. After round one completes the numbers begin to skip.

And thus ended Round 1. During this round, I missed Pugh, Long, and Frederick, but made up for it so I could have the complete round 1 set. From here out, all I did was color the players I already had drawn, not make new ones, so the numbers will start to skip.

Sadly due to Bill Belichick trading out of the first round, I ended up drawing literally zero Patriots picks. I also drew no Redskins picks, because they had no first rounder due to the RG3 trade. The Seahawks had no first rounders, but Jesse Williams fell all the way to the 5th, and thankfully he was the last player I drew. However, when I missed the 3 picks in round 1, I was prepared. So when those picks were called, I tweeted these:

Later this week I may have time to do a few more players, but for now, the project is done. It was fun, and I had a great time doing it, and I'm glad people liked it. I want to thank everyone who tweeted it out and any fan that got a laugh out of at least one. I'd also like to thank the guys at Draftpedia for the idea, and the necessary information to convey on each "card". I'll get back to my regularly scheduled comics now.

Oh, by the way, might as well post some other football art made in the past couple of weeks:
